A
Year of Change
| Hattiesburg
suffered greatly from Katrina. I am not sure if this USM
housing damage was from the storm or due to planned
deconstruction. Other than that I did not see a lot of damage
on campus. A later picture on the right shows several units
totally gone. |

| Work on the
new Union has come a long way but it has taken a long time.
| An electrical tree across from the old Union. Someone
must have needed hard-to-reach power. |
Lifting some fascia into place. This picture was taken
26 January 2006. |
One of the construction trailers was destroyed during
Katrina. |
| Notice the new shell around the Walker
Science Build, the new front, the greenhouse lean-to, and the
plantings. This construction was completed before
Katrina. |
| The quad near the Commons was reworked some time ago
but you may not have seen it. |
Sidewalks and parking lots are getting a new
look, a better look, but the redesign did destroy some
parking. This campus-wide work was started before the
storm. | |

| After Katrina almost every building in
Hattiesburg had roof damage. We became the city of blue roof.
"blue" refers to the color of the canvas (plastic) that
patched many roofs. |
Taco Bell was one of the first to get power back. Boy,
were we tired of doing without. |
| Looks like this Frat house got lucky. Well, if you can
call it that. |
Not so much damage obvious on campus but
some. |
This is a better view of the construction trailer shown
above. |
| This is the tree that was on my house (projo). We were
afraid it would cut the house in two. |
No electricity, no water, but we proved that you can
cook a pizza on a gas grill. |
This is me washing cloths and mumbling to myself "I
don't want to be a frontier
woman". | |
